Waterloo Square, Alfriston

  • Over 600 years old, the Sussex smuggler, Shanton Collins, once owned this hostelry. In 1744, Collins attacked Revenue men bringing in a recovered cargo to Shoreham. The smugglers gave the officers a whipping and turned the boat back to France with the contraband safely aboard. Over the years, several proprietors and customers have seen the ghost of a woman wearing a modern style gown standing at the base of the staircase. A seafaring man and a farmer or shepherd also haunt it. Once, there were tunnels connecting houses with the inn which were used by smugglers and other outlaws. However, these were sealed and blocked up in the First World War for security reasons.
