Hudson Street, North Shields, Tyne and Wear

  • There is no clear indication how this pub achieved its particular name. However, it is unique in England. It may have been from the late 19th century fashion for young girls being given presents of peg wooden dolls from Germany and Holland. These playthings were sold without clothing, so the girls could then make dresses for them from scraps of cloth. It is an ancient inn, overlooking the North Shields fish quay. Men visiting the lavatories, which are downstairs, have had a strong feeling they were being watched, with there is a dramatic chill. A local psychic team has investigated, with maintained there is the ghost of a woman haunting that staircase. Although they made several tests, they were unable to say whom she was or from where she had come.
