Petworth Rd, Witley, Godalming, Surrey

  • Over four centuries old, this inn was rebuilt to replace an even earlier building from the reign of Richard 2nd. There are two well-recorded ghosts here, a male and a female. Framed pencil portraits of the pair are displayed in the saloon bar. An artist staying at the White Hart was a witness to their manifestation and sketched them from memory. He saw the female ghost on the pub stairs and the male in one of the bedrooms. George Eliot, the author, lived in Witley, where she wrote her last novel, Daniel Deronda. There have been accounts over the years that her ghost has been observed many times in the parish church of All Saints.
