High Street, Brasted, Westerham, Kent

  • A 14th century pub and during the Second World War, it was much frequented by aircrew from a local aerodrome. They recorded their visits by writing their names on the blackout screen, which had been over the main door. That screen has now been preserved behind glass in one of the bars. The White Hart dates from with timber framing that has now been opened up to show as partitions between the bars and the restaurant. Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in England in 1955 and the British spies, Burgess and McLean, all dined here at different times. It exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a young fair-haired pilot officer from the Second World War. Those who have seen him describe him as having a cherubic smile.
