Castlethorpe Road, Hanslope, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire

  • A somewhat fearsome apparition took up abode as a ghost here in June 1830. He was ‘Highland Hercules’, Alex McKay, a well-, locals knew, bare knuckle fighter of the time. He died after a fight lasting 47 rounds with ‘Emerald Gem’ Burns nearby. People carried McKay back to this pub. However, he never regained consciousness. Although the Watts Arms was reputed to be haunted for many years, it was not, locals knew, by whom or what until a writer on boxing history visited. He recognised McKay from descriptions for which he was. It was able to supply dates. The pub name is after a local landowning family. One of whom, his gamekeeper murdered him in 1912.
