Swan Hotel, Market Place

  • Although the town is small it boasts this fine brick built 18th century coaching inn on the market place. There is a notice on the six-arched bridge nearby stating that anyone damaging or defacing the bridge was liable for deportation for life. This inn exhibits ghostly manifestations including a proprietor from the 1790s. Known locally as the “Old Boy” he was a jovial host in his lifetime but hanged himself in the cellars. He appears wearing dark clothing with an apron around his waist and chortling. For many years, there have been legends that the ghost Squire Plumber of the town can be seen running on foot across nearby fields, followed by a pack of hounds.
