  • This pub stands on the site of a dreadful tragedy. On Christmas Eve 1836, 40 people lived in a row of houses below the cliffs. They had been advised to leave because of a possible snowfall. However, some refused. It was during the worst winter on record and snow had piled up on the cliff top. Then it became an avalanche falling onto the cottages below. It buried those houses and eight people died. The pub people called in memory of this incident. Several of the poor souls killed still haunt the pub. Many times over the years, proprietors and proprietors have reported hearing loud screaming and cries of terror in the night. They have also heard the voices of men shouting instructions to each other as they tried to pull out the bodies.
