Martins Lane, Exeter, Devon

  • A splendidly timbered pub in the old part of Exeter, with haunted by none other than one of the best-, locals knew, Elizabethan sea dogs of all, Sir Francis Drake. On many occasions over the centuries, witnesses see him with other apparitions in sea going garb. Legend has it Drake was a noted toper. It was only permitted to drink here if accompanied by a responsible person. Reports claim that to be a bit difficult at times, even today as a ghost, with when he manifests, tweaks the ears of people sitting in the bar. Legends sprang up about him during his lifetime. The Spaniards firmly believed he had a mirror in which he could see ship movements in any part of the world.
