1 Saxon Green, Escomb, Bishop Auckland, County Durham

  • This is a 17th century inn with a 1,500 years old ghost. There are not many of those about. At one time, this people called the Royal Oak. However, it changed its name to reflect their ancient phantom. From descriptions given by witnesses, the ghost is dressed in the style of a Saxon farmer or land worker. A paranormal investigator, who visited the Saxon Inn, reported that this ghost throws bottles of whisky down the cellar steps. However, they do not break. Witnesses saw one previous proprietor, who stretched out to sleep on two chairs during a party to be struggling. The customers and staff in the bar then saw the phantom of ‘The Saxon’. He was leaning over the proprietor. He was pressing down on him with large and powerful hands.
