Rye Road

  • Local legend says the old wooden beams of the nearby Oak and Ivy have graffiti carved into them by smugglers, possibly related to the famous and feared Hawkhurst gang. Smugglers used The Oak and Ivy as the headquarters due to the easy movement of smuggled goods through tunnels beneath the pub, which links the headquarters to the Royal Oak and the Queens Inn. It is here that the ghostly legs of a smuggler have seen hanging from the chimney of the huge inglenook fireplace. One might guess that the smuggler died from suffocation while hiding in the chimney.
