Abingdon Road

  • If ever an inn could be described as a ‘gingerbread house’, this would be it. Standing at a junction surrounded by huge trees, it is two storey listed building, slightly askew, with a deeply pitched thatched roof and painted white with black gabling. Inside are period features including inglenook fireplaces, low beams and black shutters to the ground floor windows. Opened in the late 1600s, the Plough exhibits several ghostly manifestations including a cleaner in one of the rooms which has a four-poster bed and a benign presence that upturns empty glasses in the small bar. On a hill nearby there have been reports of an old-fashioned car abruptly appearing for a few seconds before it dissolves away.
