The Square

  • With history from the 17th century, this was a rather fine, former townhouse. On the green, outside the inn, are the ancient stocks. These were used to punish local men who misbehaved or broke the law after which this inn people called. Records were kept by parish councils of the individuals locked into them. The last time they were used in the UK was in 1872. During the night at the Old Stocks, there has been the occasional sound of a phantom pianist playing 1920s style music. A mysterious episode indeed, since there has been no such a musical instrument in the building for many years; Various guests and employees have seen the apparition of an old man manifesting in the bars. He is dressed in a black suit with a large clerical dog collar, with his hair is grey to white. His description portrays him as being a benign fellow, always smiling and thought to have been a previous vicar at the local church.
