Widecombe in the Moor, Newton Abbot, Devon

  • Witnesses see a sobbing child in an otherwise empty room. In addition, witnesses see a large man who strides from room to room, only to then disappear. The ghost of Tom Pearce’s grey mare haunts this inn. There is an ancient grave, nearby, where fresh flowers have been laid without explanation every year. No one in the village ever sees who leaves this funeral bouquet. Mary Jay, the person buried there, hanged herself in a barn. A gravedigger buried her body in unconsecrated ground. She had been deserted by a local farm hand, which had made her pregnant. Witnesses have seen a man dressed in old-fashioned clothes standing near the grave. He is seemingly in prayer, only to then disappear. Witnesses see the vision of Sir Francis Drake’s ghost, as he crosses the moor in a black coach pulled by headless horses.
