High Street, Staplehurst, Tonbridge, Kent

  • There are two gravestones in the garden here, with when one was removed, it started some serious haunting in the pub consisting of heavy mists and weird sounds. Domestic pets stay away from several parts of the inn and garden. Three Staplehurst women, who refused to attend Roman Catholic services, were burned at the stake in 1555. Locals think that this was the burial site of at least two of these women. They haunt the King’s Head. It would seem that apart from not attending church services, there must have been some element of their being witches. Historically, most witches were hanged in England and the justification came from Exodus 22.18; “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live”. On the other hand, many religious dissidents were burned at the stake.
