North Street, Winkfield, Windsor, Berkshire

  • A fine roadside pub named after a forester called Herne who has haunted the area for centuries. The pub name refers to an oak tree. The wind blew this down in Windsor Great Park in 1863. The ghost of Herne the Hunter, witnesses have seen, late at night outside this pub wearing a horned helmet with at the head of a pack of hounds. Herne was head keeper at the time of Richard 3rd. However, he fell into a bad favour with the authorities. He hanged himself from an oak tree. Shakespeare in the Merry Wives of Windsor mentions his ghost.
