Northchapel, Petworth, West Sussex

  • The building dates from 1576. Its name identifies with the moon, which is most great to runners and poachers. He was renowned of the time, Noah Mann, was born in the town in 1756. He later became the proprietor of this pub. As a warbler, he would get hankies starting from the earliest stage riding his stallion at full dash. He kicked the bucket when he fell into the pub fire. His body is in Northchapel churchyard. His apparition still frequents the pub. One proprietor, Mrs. Wilkinson, was here for 61 years and reported she had seen Mann on numerous events. She regularly said, 'He doesn't trouble me and I don't trouble him.'
