  • A curious story stands behind one of the phantoms at the Golden Lion. It exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghost of a girl who was raped and murdered by the headmaster of her school. No precise dates as to when this took place have been recorded. However, it appears her body was taken to this pub for an inquest. During a paranormal investigation, it , witnesses report, that an eleven years old girl, in Victorian style school uniform, was in residence as a phantom. Another ghost here , people have claimed, to be the soldier son of a previous proprietor, who expired in battle in the 1900s. Rainford locals knew it as Raineford in 2nd98, the ford or boundary of a man called Regna. The pub name is a popular one and refers heraldically to Henry 1 or the dukes of Northumberland.
