  • Almost 400 years old, this former coaching inn on Dartmoor is haunted by a farm labourer and a small boy. It is a fine white-painted inn that appears to be late Georgian. Inside is a huge brick inglenook fireplace with an open log-burning fire. The ghost of a woman has been seen frequently and it is said that she may be Mary Whiddon who was shot dead 300 years ago. She was standing at the altar of Chagford church waiting to be married when her life was taken by a jealous former lover. She is buried at Chagford and on her tombstone is the legend “Behold a Matron, yet a Maid.”
