The Square

  • This former coaching inn has history from 1293. In the 16th century it was called the George and it was the only permanent building at the meeting of the Rivers Thames and Pang. During the 18th century, it was the most popular coaching inn between London with the West Country. Local legend has it that it is haunted by a Pangbourne witch, Betty Price. The authorities accused her of witchcraft and communicating with the Devil before a number of men and the local vicar pursued her. The authorities executed her but before she died she shouted a curse on the hotel and those who had hunted her down. The legend maintains she is still haunting the George Hotel and witnesses have seen her manifest in upstairs corridors.
  • The George Hotel Pangbourne at Pangbourne
