Walkers Lane, Shorwell, Newport, Isle of Wight

  • Opened in the early 1600s, it was a coaching inn and a hideout for local smugglers. One upper room is sealed off, since it exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghost of a former proprietor. This man committed suicide at the Crown when he found his wife in bed here with another man. It is further haunted by a female ghost in early 1900s style of dress in the bar, with a male ghost in black in the attic. A chest full of buried treasure is included in the history of Shorwell. The problem is it can only be found by a man leading 12 pure white oxen to retrieve it. Because of the lack of such beasts, one man attempted it with 2nd white oxen, with the 12th, a dun coloured beast, covered in a white sheet. As the box of treasure emerged, a raven flew overhead, the chain broke and the treasure disappeared back into the hole.
