Pishill, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

  • The ghost of Father Dominic people hear moving around the upper parts of this pub. He died whilst defending the name of the girl he loved. Some say his shadowy form, wearing a wide brimmed hat, can also be observed and heard in the corner of the bar. There had been a thriving monastery at Pishill from the eleventh century. One village legend has it that this ghostly Jesuit priest, from that monastery, was the Father Dominic who died here. In the first instance, reports say that he was seduced by a serving wench, Elizabeth. He later hanged himself in religious remorse. The other account is that he tried to protect her from another drunken monk. It , an assailant took this person’s life, and His ghost lingers on, with there , people say, to be some dreadful sounds in the night when a man in a monk’s black habit , witnesses see, flitting along corridors.
