  • Witnesses have seen the ghostly apparition of a woman in blue in a bedroom at this inn. She often moves women’s makeup and toiletries around. Some have named her as a local woman, Mary Baynes, who was said to have been a witch. She died suddenly after arguing furiously with a former proprietor of the Cross Keys after his dog had killed her cat. Cats were important to witches as familiars with these animals being the witch’s communication with the Devil. The name of the pub is a widespread one in Christian heraldry referring to St Peter. He appears in the arms of the papacy and various bishops.
