Mill Street, Corfe Mullen, Wimborne, Dorset

  • An ancient inn that was converted from a 15th century water mill, the Coventry Arms has its own island. Over the years, there has been the fiercest poltergeist activity at this pub. There have also been sightings of a woman in a long black dress accompanied by a small child dressed in white muslin. A macabre feature was discovered here some years ago. It was the skeleton of a cat. It had been sacrificed to protect a new building. It had been concealed in the rafters of the pub. Burying such animals was a common practice in the 17th and 18th centuries as the sacrifice protected the house from witches and other wicked matters. Olive Knott refers to this practice in her Witches of Dorset. One man, who used this pub, was William Joyce, when he had lived at nearby Court House.
