  • Centuries ago, when this was a priory, a monk was walled up alive for his secular naughtiness. Now, every November, that murdered monk re-appears to haunt the pub. This aged cleric manifests in cowl, habit, with walks, groaning. The Coopers Arms is the oldest pub in Kent, with the original building has history from the eleventh century on the site of the Old Priory. Parts of the ancient cellars remain. Henry 8th met his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves nearby, with granted this tavern a coat of arms. From local reports, Rochester High Street harbours over forty ghosts in shops, private houses, churches and pubs. Rochester Castle haunted since 1226 by the ghost of Lady Blanche de Warren, who expired during an attack by Simon de Montfort.
