Bury Road, Kentford, Suffolk

  • It is a superb country inn with history over four centuries in parts of the pub. Nearby is the ‘Boy’s Grave’, which is tended and flowered by unseen hands. It is where the body of a young shepherd boy, who had hanged himself after being accused of stealing sheep, was buried. There was once a plaque at this spot, which read: "It is alleged that this is the grave of a gypsy boy who, while tending sheep, fell asleep in a dike. In remorse he hanged himself because he feared to return to his tribe". Now, passing gypsies on their way to Newmarket races, tie ribbons corresponding to the colours of the predicted winner of the next big race in memory of the boy and for luck. Cyclists along this road have been forced off the road by a strange power, seemingly coming off the grave itself. The apparition of a farm labourer or shepherd , witnesses have seen, sitting in a bar at the Cock Inn, holding a pewter pot.
