84 New Elvet, Durham, County Durham

  • Reports claim that a crying female haunts this establishment. Although it has history over five centuries, it was once a city manor house. The present City Arms now presents as a late Victorian façade with faux marble and upper floors of a Georgian style. Inside is a two centuries old grand staircase. Reports say that it haunted by the ghost of a hangman. He stayed here in the late 1830s. He was at Durham to hang Jacob Ehlert, a Prussian seaman for the murder of his sea captain, John Berckholz at Sunderland. During investigation by a paranormal team witnesses reported that the bar exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include the ghost of a young girl. Witnesses describe her as being about 12-14, with very long hair. She literally floats through the air. One corridor exhibits ghostly manifestations. These include a large and bossy woman accompanied by a strange odour, both musty and earthy.
