  • What is the mysterious inscription written on a windowpane at the Black Horse? Almost 70 years ago, a woman sleeping here awoke to see a phantom woman in her room. Next day, people found scratch marks on the windowpane, which could only have been cut by a diamond ring or glasscutter. Over the years, a Lady in Grey has frequently appeared at the inn. When she does manifest, her ghost is accompanied by an odour that is both musty and peppermint. The Black Horse has been a popular pub name since the 14th century. By the 17th century, it was the nickname of the seventh Dragoon Guards, who had black collars and cuffs on their jackets. They rode only black horses.
