  • Pubs with this name often have a connection with ‘anker’, an ancient name for eight and a half imperial gallons of beer. Every now and again, articles and personal possession disappear and then return, with the resident ghost is held responsible. Because he has been around for so long, he has been given a nickname, Charlie. One of his paranormal larks is to smash all the ashtrays in the middle of the night. Charlie also plays around with the sound systems throughout the bars. On one occasion, a woman’s watch disappeared from her room and turned up, some eight weeks later in a laundry basket. Again, the poltergeist was held responsible.
