Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis, Dorset

  • Originally called the ‘Black Dog’, this inn is now named the Talbot Arms after a hunting dog from the 15th century. Many years ago, a farm labourer in this village was plagued by a black phantom dog in his house. One day he took a poker. He pursued the beast up into the attic. Whilst he was lashing out at it, the ghost dog scrambled through the thatch. With his poker, the man disturbed a treasure trove of Stuart coins. By this piece of splendid serendipity, he opened up his house as an inn. With suitable gratitude, he called it the Black Dog. The beast still roams throughout the pub and the lane behind it, despite the change of pub name.
