Askerswell, Dorset

  • The village was notorious for smuggling for centuries, so the Spyway has one of the most evocative pub names of that period. Witnesses have seen the ghost of a young Victorian woman over the years at the inn. People have claimed that she died in unrequited love. Found down a winding country lane, on what is called the ‘old road’, there has been an inn here for almost 500 years. It took its name from the smugglers who had operated in this area. The inn people used as a lookout post for the outlaws avoiding the Revenue men. The Spyway featured in the film, Far from the Madding Crowd.
