91 Clifton Street, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire

  • A rather splendid Second-grade listed hotel that exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a mean little man who lurks, prying into other peoples’ business. This ghost is wearing a 1940s style suit in dark grey. Spectators initially saw him rifling through documents belonging to others, with then making telephone calls from a hotel landline. The Ship and Royal has a Tudor style façade with history from the early 1800s. The phantom of the horse of a local squire is frequently observed, cantering through Witch Wood. This animal had belonged to John Talbot Clifton, who had lived at Lytham Hall. Although witchcraft ceased to be a crime in 1736, there is a witch’s grave in the wood with the inscription ‘The Witch. Died January 5th 1888.’
