  • This is where Elizabeth 1st sheltered from the rain during the visit Lord Burghley. However, the story is less nebulous with more interesting. An early Victorian pub now, it is on the site of a previous one. It was originally called the White Horse to Queen Victoria planted an oak tree on the village square in front of the pub. This pub name is unique. The resident ghost is a little old woman who makes frequent appearances in the bar, with always on the same stool. Those who saw him describe his ghost as a woman looking very happy to look at them, smiled with disappeared. The ghost of St Oswald, who directs red blood at a time of national crisis, haunts a well in Finchampstead. St Oswald was a pagan king of Northumberland.
