The Cross, Burley, Ringwood, Hampshire

  • In a splendid New Forest village, this 17th century inn was once the home of smugglers. It exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghost of Peter Warne, a well-, locals knew, smuggler, highwayman, with leader of a gang of outlaws. His horse is buried underneath the foundations of the pub. There has been the sound of a whinnying horse on frequent occasions, although there was no such beast nearby. Some years ago, a secret room was discovered where illicit booty had been stored away from the prying eyes of the Revenue Men. Burley has had a long connection with witches and, during the late 1950s, Sybil Leek. He was a self-styled white witch lived in this village. This witch was frequently seen walking around Burley with her pet jackdaw on her shoulder, before she moved to North America. Some of the gift shops in Burley now sell witch-related gifts and ornaments.Burley is notable in English folklore for being the location of a dragon’s lair at Burley Beacon, immediately outside the village.
