London Road, Pyecombe, Brighton, East Sussex

  • Because of the number of fatal accidents on the main road that passes through Pycombe, a mortuary was established in the Plough cellar in the early 1930s. There have been reports of several apparitions manifesting over the years, with one of them is a nun in a grey habit. Glasses and bottles have abruptly moved from shelves without good reason. Even on windless nights in the summer, curtains have suddenly been ripped down with such force, the rails and fixings have come down too. Several customers have told proprietors that when they have been to the women’s lavatory, they had come face to face with a ghostly nun. Another customer, who was being served at the bar, saw a woman in a black dress and white pinafore standing behind the proprietor, who gradually disappeared.
