Low Bridge, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire

  • She was born in a cave at Knaresborough. She foretold the future that included the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, the steam engine, aircraft or flying machines and even radio. She was Ursula Southiel, born in 1488 and died in 1561. She was married to Toby Shipton. She became famous as a fortune-teller. The resident ghost at the Mother Shipton pub, with history from 1645, is Peggy, a gipsy who , an assailant took this person’s life, here by her husband. She cannot stand ill-behaved children, with frequently appears to frighten them. Stories abound that over the years, Peggy has tapped licensees on their shoulders, with commenced telling her tale of woe. When she appears, she is dressed in layers of clothing, held about the waist by a piece of rope.
