Moresby Hall, Moresby,

  • The building with an ornate facade has history from 1690. In 1715, one of Fletcher family who owned the hall was taken to London and questioned about his Jacobite sympathies then tried for treason. He forgot to tell servants that another Jacobite and his son were hiding in a secret room and both starved to death. When the hall was being renovated in 1998, the skeletons of a man and a small child were found inside the huge chimney breast. It is this unfortunate Jacobite and his son who haunt the hotel. During a previous renovation many years ago an old stone floor was taken up and underneath were eight skeletons. The police investigated and passed the case on to the local archaeological association. They reported that these were Roman remains and had probably come from a burial ground near the old fort.
  • Moresby Hall at Moresby
