38 Molesworth Street

  • The Molesworth Arms is an old coaching inn dating back four centuries with a ghost that haunts it annually. Each New Year’s Eve, a black coach pulled by four horses with a headless equestrian on top drives into the courtyard at midnight. Various witnesses have reported that three ghostlike people climb down and stand in the yard for a few seconds before the coach, horses and passengers disappear. The townspeople suffered a series of disasters in the 15th century and the Rev Thomas Lovibond was so distressed at the number of people and animals who lost their lives crossing the River Camel that he built a bridge. This was completed in 1468 and locals believe that some of those poor souls perished before then.
