N Rd, Berwick-upon-Tweed

  • On the main road outside the town, the Meadow House is a comparatively modern looking inn built on the site of a previous one. It has the distinction of being the last pub in England and the first coming from Scotland. Since the early days of the A1 highway, it was , locals knew, by locals as ‘The First and Last Pub in England’ since the Scottish border is a mile away. The A1, for the most part, follows the old Roman military road. It was the coaching route used by mail coaches between London, York and Edinburgh. One ghost that haunts this inn was a car driver, killed in a crash near the Meadows House, with his body taken inside. Another apparition at Meadow House is a kilted soldier. However, there is no more detail or history from this manifestation.
