Stane Street, Ockley, Surrey

  • The village was on the site of Stane Street, one of the main Roman roads through England, with this building has stood as a former coaching inn since the 16th century. Inside it has much in the way of low ceilings, old beams and open log fires. For many years, it haunted by a ghostly woman in a long dress. Employees have seen her unexpectedly appear, float across the bar room, with then disappear into a wall. Ockley could be the location of a battle in AD 851 when King Aethelwulf fought against an invading Danish army. The chronicler refers to the battlefield as Aclea, Oak Field, when the Danish army was defeated. However, many killed on both sides. There have been stories over the years that ghosts and apparitions of soldiers from that battle still appear on the village streets.
