29-30 Surrey St, Hove, Brighton, East Sussex

  • Immediately outside Brighton railway station, the Grand Central is a gothic style pub that was previously called Finnegan’s Wake. This is the title of a book by James Joyce, with one of the most difficult to read in the English language. Many years ago, when it was the Nightingale, a woman fell onto the line at the nearby railway station. She was carried to the pub, with a doctor was soon on the premises. Her wounds were bandaged. However, subsequently she died from severe internal injuries. Now, her ghost haunts the Grand Central. Sobservers describe him as a grey haired woman in a black skirt, who walks slowly through the bar into the kitchen. There has also been severe poltergeist activity over the years, mainly in the beer cellar.
