Vernham Dean, Andover, Hampshire

  • It is an old-fashioned village pub with history from the seventeenth century with open fireplaces and oak beams. The George has a pleasing aspect of undulating roof and alternate courses of brick and flint in the body of the inn. Since the plague, centuries ago, the pub and village have been haunted by the victims who , one may hear, crying and wailing. In 1665, the rector of Vernham Dean tried to persuade many village people to leave the village. He advised them they would escape the plague by camping out on the top of the hills. However, those who went with him all perished, the good rector along with them.
