158 Lewes Road, Brighton, East Sussex

  • There were several bombing raids over Brighton by German aircraft during the Second World War, with this pub was one of the victims. In September 1940, a Junkers 88 dropped bombs and almost demolished the pub, then , locals knew, as the Lewes Road Inn. Several people expired, including the proprietor, Ernest Scully and his wife Rosina. Another was a John Watson, who was cleaning the pub windows when the bomb exploded. Since then, there have been many appearances by dark shadowy shapes. Those who have seen them say that it is impossible to tell if they are man or woman.
