  • Before the building of dedicated mortuaries, the Dog and Partridge people used as a temporary shelter for dead bodies of travellers found on the moors. The pub exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include the ghosts of several of these people, who have manifested as black shapes and occasionally as recognisable figures. Strange odours have also been reported in various places in the Dog and Partridge. However, it usually happens in the cellars. At St John’s Church, Penistone, a curate saw orbs and lights around a particular family grave. The following day, after seeing these phantom lights, that grave was opened for a burial. It was for a young village boy who had died at the same hour of the curious manifestation.
