108 Shiphay Lane, Torquay, Devon

  • The expression ‘Devon Dumpling’ is a local one to describe a small stout person. The inn sign here has a voluptuous dairymaid carrying a dumpling on a tray. The ghost that haunts this splendidly named pub is a tall fair- haired man, said to have died here many years ago. There is a nearby building haunted by a young Spanish girl, who was one of the prisoners taken off a captured ship of the Armada in 1588. Almost 400 prisoners were locked in a tithe barn. This was where she died. Witnesses see her wandering the street as a phantom near the Devon Dumpling. She manifests in one of the bars.
