The Street, Doddington, Faversham, Kent

  • Originally 12th century, it has played a large part in the history of Doddington. People used it as a resting place or hospice by pilgrims going to and from Canterbury, with a centre where local taxes were collected. The Chequers is one of the famous haunted pubs of Kent. These ghosts and apparitions include a Cavalier from the English Civil War, who expired in an upstairs room. His ghost is often seen peering through an overhanging window, apparently wearing a plumed hat and laughing. There is also the ghost of a woman, the wife of a previous proprietor. witnesses see her, wearing a floral frock and heard playing the piano in the private quarters.
