1 Main Road, Westhay, Glastonbury

  • About 100 years ago, a proprietor here died in a fire after falling asleep holding a glass of cider and a cigar. He has since been haunting the pub. Employees have come across the old man when about their duties in the cellars. He has given them a sharp tweak, with cold air has blown onto their necks. Most of the trouble started after a licensee demolished a wall in the pub while refurbishing. Glasses started flying around, with mirrors fell from wall hangings. Traditionally, an inn sign for the Bird in Hand showed a mailed fist on which a falcon was perched. In medieval times, the sign of the Bird in Hand also indicated it was a brothel.
