Church St, Charlbury, Oxfordshire

  • An early 18th century coaching inn on the edge of the town, the Bell Hotel is on two storeys with jutting windows in a three-sided shape. The stone fronted inn bears the original date of opening, 1700. Inside are exposed stonewalls, three open fireplaces, a huge window seat and the old stables are now used as bedrooms. It is in these old stables that two of the resident ghosts appear. One is a young woman in the uniform of a scullery cleaner of the mid-1800s with a sacking apron and mobcap. The other is a man in a dark suit holding a raincoat, neatly draped over his left arm. Charlbury village exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a white or grey horse, galloping riderless and jumping over hedges.
