East Street, Corfe Castle, Wareham, Dorset

  • Inside the Banke's Hotel are bare brick walls, an oak beamed ceiling, with a fine, large inglenook fireplace. The attic rooms of the inn are haunted by two young girls in Victorian style clothing of black dresses, white pinafores, with white bonnets. The three-storey hotel dates from 1649. It was at one time called the Ship. The author, Enid Blyton, based many of her stories around Dorset. In "Five on a Treasure Island", she used Corfe Castle which she called Kirrin Castle. PC Plod, from the Noddy books was based on PC Chris Rone of Corfe Castle, who was delighted. He boasted of this throughout his life.
