  • An old coaching inn opened in 1748, the Antelope, once called the Angel. Then the Horseshoe is perched on the hill overlooking the town. The name Antelope for an inn was widespread. It is often referred to the heraldic arms of the dukes of Bedford and Gloucester, i.e., the kings Henry 4th, 5th, and 6th. The inn advertises ‘ghosts in only a few rooms’. Amongst these ghosts is a serving girl who hanged herself over a century ago, with a monk in a brown habit who may have been at the abbey. When the servant girl manifests, she is wearing a Victorian style dress, sackcloth apron, and clogs.
