  • They maintain the ghost that haunts this pub is of a high social class. Witnesses describe him as a tall thin man in a dark grey suit, with a cravat inside a checked shirt. Witnesses have seen and heard him at this early Victorian pub for over 50 years. When he speaks, witnesses describe it as an upper class voice, if a bit on the reedy side. Locals think he died either in the pub or at a house nearby. He has taken up his ghostly residence here. Ulverston is famous for the birthplace of the comic Stan Laurel. There are statues of Laurel and Oliver Hardy, his film partner. There is a pub at Ulverston, named in his honour, the Stanley Laurel Inn.
